Karen Malik, Flame Keeper

The Long View is shared by many. Collectively it is The Monroe Institute story. We are fortunate to have books and recordings of Bob Monroe, but there are dozens of backstories, living archives rich in the history of TMI, waiting to be told.

This is part of Karen Malik’s long view. Chances are you know her — chances are Karen’s skill and commitment contributed directly to a life altering event you experienced during a TMI program. She is loved by Monroe participants for good reason.

It's the mid-1970s. The "human potential movement" is in full swing in California's Bay Area and Karen Malik is at the heart of it.

Karen had been studying with a channeled nonphysical entity for five or six years at that time, and was just completing a year of "functional silence," when her friend Chris Lenz asked her to help him put together some workshops for a guy named Robert Monroe, whom he had met through the California Institute of Integral Studies. Karen said, "sure, as long as I don't have to talk to anyone." As it turned out, the chef was a no-show and Karen ended up cooking for the 30 participants.

It wasn't until a month later at Feathered Pipe Ranch in Montana that Karen encountered Bob in the flesh. The first ten-day version of the M-5000 program (now called the Gateway Voyage) was about to take place. On arrival at Feathered Pipe, Bob handed Chris a stack of program tapes — including the new Elation Series. Karen was there to monitor the forty to sixty participants as they lay everywhere on the floor for ten days listening to Hemi-Sync®.

Karen remembers that Bob looked depressed. As Bob's friend, Joe (author, Joseph Chilton Pearce) said of him during that time, "He has a tiger by the tale and he doesn't know what to do with it."

Notwithstanding the toll Bob's perplexity about his out-of-body explorations seemed to be taking on him, participants of M-5000 were experiencing powerful, life-changing events -- breakthroughs. "They were popping off all over the place," Karen recollects.

At the end of the program, Bob asked Chris to move to Whistlefield, his property in Virginia, to work closely with him in the lab. Bob then asked Karen to develop the West Coast. She said yes.

Karen organized weekend workshops. Bob and Nancy "Scooter" Honeycutt, his step-daughter, co-trainer, and “right-hand ‘man,’” as Bob called her, would fly out to train the programs. Karen became a trainer herself through the sink-or-swim method when Bob, who was scheduled to train a program alone, called at the last minute saying he wasn't coming — that Karen would have to train it herself. From then on Karen trained all of the West Coast programs she set up.

Meanwhile, Bob purchased 800 acres in Nelson County, Virginia, and sold Whistlefield to bankroll the construction of the new Monroe Institute facilities. Karen and Chris teamed up again to train the first week-long program held in the Center. It was July, 1979. Participants were coming in while the Center construction was still in progress. Karen remembers assisting George Durette, the facilities and farm manager, to lay the kitchen floor when someone yelled, "They're coming with their suitcases!" George and Karen looked at each other in shock, dropped what they were doing, and ran upstairs to tack down the carpet at the front door.

Chris and Karen pitched in, literally resoldering some of the wiring because half of the building didn't have sound in the CHEC units. Karen stayed for months in the Center as it was being completed, lending a hand during non-program weeks. All hands were on deck as The Institute entered this new phase. “We now had our own center.”

The rest, as they say, is history. Karen has facilitated thousands of participants' journeys deep into self, into other realities, into transformation. What keeps her doing this work with TMI? "I see the tremendously meaningful results experienced by the majority of people coming through programs. It works, this tool of consciousness."

At some point Karen realized she had fulfilled her contract at the Soul level. She chose to continue. The Institute's work had become a large part of her own life's work. "Where else could I find this? To be able to hold space for the level of work done at TMI has required me to continue my own personal development on all levels. It's phenomenal -- a gift -- to me. I consider it an honor to do this work."

And how would she describe Bob Monroe? "He was a man ahead of his time, a visionary ... complex, vulnerable, curious, with an allegiance to his inner guidance that drove his life. He was conflicted about his path but driven by it. He followed through with what he was asked to do by his guidance. One thing I really respected about Bob was that he wouldn't let people put him on a pedestal or in the role of a guru."

We, the directors of The Monroe Institute, wish to give a separate, special thanks to Skip Atwater for taking on job of President for the past few years. After the death of Laurie Monroe, the Board of Directors in its January 2007 elected Skip as the Interim Executive Director and President. His hard work kept TMI going and functioning well. When Paul Rademacher became the Executive Director, Skip continued to help with the management of TMI as its President. There are no adequate words to describe his love and dedication to the Institute over the years and his willingness to take on extra responsibilities as the need has arisen.

The office of President was combined into the office of Executive Director in order to relieve Skip of the day-to-day management responsibilities so that he can give time and energy to the research and further development of the SAM Technology and programs, such an important part of TMI's future.

We want to express our deep appreciation and thanks for taking on so many responsibilities, being there to carry us through many changing circumstances, and always ready to help where needed. We look forward to your continued support developing the SAM technology and specialized programs as we move forward.

Gratefully,

Board of Directors
The Monroe Institute

Astounding visuals, massive amounts of information! Amazing!

My first experience of the new technology - really liked it. My brain felt held or physically touched by the resonant tuning. When done with Right and left I could feel the change discreetly. Upon merging both sides there was nice shift to what felt like acute awareness, but in the altered state way.

At end of exercise felt as if "returning" from somewhere, even though I didn't feel that I'd left.

Very organic feeling with technology, strong impressions.

Highly perceptive feeling in imagery, kinesthetic responses, sounds.

Achieved one of the most expanded consciousness experiences of my life.

Unusually clear visuals - felt as if in hypnogogic state...

Was not aware of my body. Amazing.

Wow, almost as good as the comfort of the Monroe black box*, but created by the sound technology rather than the comfort of the black box.

Rather vivid visuals with some crossover feeling of being there.

No question - best TMI experience to date. Beyond exhilarated - joy!

I liked the daily meditations!

Would like more exercises in unity consciousness and super-love.

After much careful consideration I have decided to resign from my position as Executive Director of The Monroe Institute. My reasons for doing so are many and varied but come down to four primary desires: to have a marriage, a home, a life outside of work, and time to write.

My main reason for taking on the Executive Director role was to give back something to an institute that has meant so very much to me personally. This I have tried to do with all my effort.

Now it is time for me to step aside and allow someone new to continue that effort with fresh energy and enthusiasm. It is also important for the new Board of Directors to have an opportunity to hire someone of their own choosing to lead in the directions they set forth.

At the urging of the board chair and vice chair, I will stay through the end of this year to help with the transition and to fulfill my remaining speaking engagements for 2011.

I am deeply grateful for this opportunity to serve and wish each of you great joy and success in bringing this life changing opportunity to ever increasing numbers of people. Thank you to each of you who have been so supportive of me over these past 4+ years. Your encouragement has been appreciated more than I can express.

Please know that I will strive to support the excellent work of this organization and will continue to be an ambassador to the public on its behalf at every opportunity.

Our deepest thanks and unconditional support go with you, Paul. You will be dearly missed.

On or about August, I put in a DEC request to help my newborn nephew who was born premature and was near death weighing in at just over 1 pound. My brother and his wife were quite distraught at the thought of losing another child.

I want to let you know that this baby, who was named Matthew, is now nearly 6 pounds in weight and is coming home tomorrow! It has been amazing. I wish to thank you and the DEC members who worked on him, my brother Ken, and my sister-in-law Rosemary. They have benefited very much. My family and I believe that DEC made all the difference.

Please convey our appreciation to DEC folks who took on this healing work.
