Yoga

Every day during your program at the Monroe Institute you have the opportunity to practice yoga with one of our highly trained Yoga Instructors:

Shaaron Honeycutt

Shaaron feels blessed to call the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, south of Charlottesville, Virginia; home. Originally attracted to yoga as 30 year old “weekend warrior-ess” with a desk job and low back pain, she found yoga not only eliminated her discomfort but enlightened her to a whole new world. The challenges that yoga presented, on more than a physical level, inspired her to throw herself into the practice and to eventually teach.

Svadyaya, or study of self, has brought an element of initiation into her practice and life. The looking within and reclaiming the lost, ignored, or suppressed aspects of self have been transformative for her on her path.

Shaaron feels that she evolved into the Iyengar method and has studied it intently since 1998, and has been to India to study with the Iyengars at The Iyengar Institute in Pune. She began serious study of Iyengar yoga with Sandra Pleasants, and is currently apprenticing with John Schumacher. A certified Iyengar teacher, she is presently serving on the board of The Iyengar Yoga Association of the Southeast. Shaaron finds as much inspiration through her teaching as through her practice. In the Charlottesville area, she teaches Yoga for Parkinson’s disease at the Charlottesville Senior Center , and regular yoga classes at Blue Ridge Yoga, Wintergreen Resort, in Crozet/Batesville at the Polarity Barn, and daily morning classes for participants at The Monroe Institute. The intention of her teaching is to enable personal growth and expansion of consciousness through in-depth journeys into the body. Her classes are built on detail and a sense of humor, allowing for a deep yoga experience. She encourages everyone to wake up and live their greatest possible life.

Surya Lipscombe

Surya first discovered the extraordinary effects of yoga on his stress levels and happiness quotient in 1973. He took Integral Yoga Teacher Training in 1974 and continued training at Satchidananda Ashram in Connecticut, and at Yogaville in Virginia. He ran Body*Mind*Spirit in Charlottesville (combining Massage, Shiatsu and Yoga modalities) for 10 years. He has resided in Yogaville for 11 years and sees Yoga as a way to spread inner peace and wellbeing to everyone. His yoga style is for everyone, regardless of age, fitness level, or health! "Modifications can be made so all can benefit from the amazing science of Yoga!"

While many of the Institute’s powerful educational audio materials, programs and workshops contribute to wellness, they are not intended to replace medical diagnosis and treatment. DO NOT listen to audio-guidance educational materials while driving or operating heavy equipment, or with other devices that may influence your state of consciousness. If you have a tendency towards seizures, auditory disorders (see below), or adverse mental conditions(s), DO NOT use the Institute's audio-guidance educational materials without first consulting your physician. In the unlikely event that you experience any unusual physical or mental discomfort, immediately discontinue use.
Use of the Spatial Angle Modulation™ audio technology is contraindicated if you experience hyperacusis, an abnormal condition in which the complex electrical signals generated by sound vibrations are misinterpreted, confused, or exaggerated. People with cochlear hyperacusis may feel ear pain, discomfort, annoyance, or some other emotional reaction when certain sounds are heard. In vestibular hyperacusis exposure to sound often results in falling or a loss of balance or postural control and some of the same reactions as with cochlear hyperacusis can also occur. Other symptoms include sudden severe vertigo or nausea. In the unlikely event that you experience any unusual physical or mental discomfort, immediately discontinue use of the Spatial Angle Modulation™ audio technology.

DO NOT listen to Spatial Angle Modulation™ (SAM) technology while driving or operating heavy equipment, or with other devices that may influence brainwave activity. While SAM may contribute to wellness, it is never intended to replace medical diagnosis and treatment. If you have a tendency towards seizures, auditory disorders, or adverse mental conditions(s), DO NOT listen to SAM technology without first consulting your physician. Though rare, should you experience any unusual physical or mental discomfort, discontinue use. Outreach Programs

Outreach programs are off-campus one or two-day programs facilitated by trainers taught and accredited by The Monroe Institute.

These programs are designed to give a group experience similar to the longer programs in local areas in many parts of the world.  Typically, these programs are not residential and offer the possibility of returning home in the evenings.

Bring a program to your area

If you would like to organize a group in your area, please contact our office, or get in contact directly with any of the Outreach trainers listed.

Excursion Workshop

The basic Outreach program is a weekend workshop called the Excursion Workshop. This two-day adventure into expanded states of awareness facilitates profound relaxation, deep contemplation, increased intuition, and communication with your Total Self and related energies.

Important personal revelations are commonplace during an Excursion Workshop. Specifically designed exercises with the Hemi-Sync® audio-guidance technology form the core of the workshop, together with explanation, discussion, and supportive group interaction.

Advanced Excursion Workshops

Other Advanced Excursion workshops will be available in the second half of 2012.  These three workshops will contain specific exercises for healing, personal development, and inner development.

Other workshops

Many facilitators have created workshops related to different topics of interest.  Once you have done the Excursion Workshop, you will be informed of ongoing possibilities.

Programs

Programs at the Monroe Institute are many and varied to allow participants to pursue their own personal path of exploration.

At the Virginia campus programs are conducted at special lodging and conference facilities, the Nancy Penn Center and Roberts Mountain Retreat.  Located in the pastoral foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Charlottesville, Virginia, these facilities provide comfortable accommodations that maximize the effectiveness of the process while offering a uniquely supportive environment for self-discovery and personal transformation.

Accredited residential Program trainers provide the knowledge and depth of experience to assist you on your journey.

What programs can do for you:

From several studies during and after our programs, it was found that participants experienced:

  • Enhanced mental abilities
  • Resolution of emotional conflicts
  • Peak experiences
  • Inner guidance or "Channeling"
  • Experiences of consciousness outside of Time and Space
  • Extreme psychological well-being
  • Feelings of deep relaxation and inner calm
  • More life satisfaction

What you can expect at a program:

(in Virginia – very similar in off-campus programs)

Day 1

When you arrive at the Charlottesville airport, a shuttle picks you up to bring you to the Institute, about 45 minutes away, in the rolling foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

On arrival at the center, a host will greet you and show you to your room.  The hostess will show you the different technology aspects of your special bed chamber (CHEC unit) and give you a tour of the facility.

A trainer will give you a brief intake interview, to answer any questions you might have and talk about your expectations of the program.

After dinner the first program session will begin with an overview by the trainer(s) and introduction of participants.  The first audio exercise will begin after a presentation by the trainer(s) of the content and purpose of the exercise, and a review of how the equipment works. Afterwards snacks are available.  Our special sleep sounds are piped into the bed chambers for support in sleep, if you wish.

Days 2-6

A morning affirmation and wake-up music start the day, followed by an optional yoga class.  After breakfast, the morning consists of several audio exercises, each presented by the trainer(s) and experiences are shared afterwards.  Sharing in the group is optional.

During the long lunch break, there is time for a massage (for an additional fee), a walk to the lake or around the grounds, socializing or resting.

We encourage you to take this time to be in your own process, and not be spending much time on computers or cell phones, though internet access is available.

After the break and in the evenings there are more exercises and other activities related to the program content.  Often guest speakers are invited to share with the group.

Day 7

Participants leave before 12 noon, usually after breakfast.  There are no exercises on this day.

Different types of programs:

6-day residential programs

At the main Virginia campus, we have approximately 55 programs a year, each beginning on Saturday afternoon and ending the following Friday after breakfast.

The Gateway Voyage is the basic program and sets the foundation for the graduate programs.
Graduate programs can be focused on expansion to higher dimensions, healing, personal growth, psychic skills or other areas of interest.

The Out-of-Body Intensive, Exploration Essence and Exploring Energy Healing programs have no prerequisites, but do not allow access to the Graduate programs.

Some of these programs are also held internationally and in other parts of the US, with the same general schedule. Several three-day programs complete the schedule.

3-day residential programs

These programs are offered for individuals who aren’t able to attend a full 6-day program but still want to experience the benefits of the Institute. The programs typically start on a Friday evening and end on Monday morning.

Outreach programs

Certified Outreach facilitators offer one or two-day programs in many areas around the world. These programs offer participants an intensive close to home, in a group setting and guided by a trained and experienced facilitator.

Continuing Education Credits

The Monroe Institute is pleased to offer Continuing Education (CE) credit for a number of courses. Depending on the requirements of your state licensing board, you may be able to receive Continuing Education credits for Counselors, Social Workers, or Massage Therapists.

Hemi-Sync® Frequently Asked Questions

General

Q: In a nutshell, what is Hemi-Sync®?
A: Hemi-Sync® is a scientifically based and clinically proven "audio-guidance" technology that uses sound to influence brain wave activity. This patented, and highly sophisticated technology is backed by over 50 years of research. For more details, see the expanded explanation in What is Hemi-Sync®?

Q: How does Hemi-Sync® work?
A: Hemi-Sync® is an audio-guidance process that works through the generation of complex, multilayered audio signals, which act together to create a resonance that is reflected in unique brain wave forms characteristic of specific states of consciousness. The result is a focused, whole-brain state known as hemispheric synchronization, or “Hemi-Sync®,” where the left and right hemispheres are working together in a state of coherence. As an analogy, lasers produce focused, coherent light. Hemi-Sync® produces a focused, coherent mind, which is an optimal condition for improving human performance.

Q: Is Hemi-Sync® on all the products?
A: Yes.

Q: Are all titles available in both tape and CD format?
A: All titles are available on CD. We are in the process of phasing out our cassette tape inventory.

Q: Are the Hemi-Sync® frequencies the same on each title?
A: No. The Hemi-Sync® process has evolved into a sophisticated multi-layering of Hemi-Sync® signals - "designer mixes" of sound frequencies, fashioned to be optimally effective for a given application. Naturally, Hemi-Sync® sleep products incorporate predominately delta frequencies; learning products predominately beta and so forth. However these designer mixes are supplemented with special sound frequencies, which enable the desired result. This is the "key" to the effectiveness of Hemi-Sync.

Q: How long are Hemi-Sync® tapes and CDs?
A: Most are between 35 and 60 minutes long. Timing varies to accomplish the purpose of each listening experience.

Q: When I download a CD to my computer, the media player displays a different title.
A: Most media players first access an online database (which may or may not have the latest or correct information) to identify the contents of a CD. You may be able to adjust your media player’s settings to pull the information from the CD instead of the online database. Since 2006 Monroe Products has digitally encoded our CDs with artist, title and copyright information, but we have little to no input on how online databases are managed.

Q: Can someone with hearing loss benefit from Hemi-Sync®?
A: Yes. Doctors and individuals with impaired hearing tell us that the frequencies are effectively carried to the brain by the bones in the ear canal.

Q: Is Hemi-Sync® like hypnosis?
A: Yes, they are similar. Hypnosis is an induced, altered state of mind, in which the body is deeply relaxed, sufficient to be temporarily ignored, except for demands like bladder fullness, etc. It is sometimes described as "focused concentration." This "state" is one in which the participant has perhaps even more control over the body and self than in "ordinary" states of consciousness. Witness the fact that hypnosis is sometimes used for pain control in minor surgeries, childbirth, and even dentistry. It is an expanded state of awareness, in which one can be fully aware of the sensory data from the environment, (sound, light, temperature, etc.) and at the same time can develop awareness of other data sources as well, such as past lives, out-of-body information, information from guides, one's inner self, etc. Neither state can "make" you DO anything. You are able to maintain your faculties for choice and value systems, including choosing to follow suggestions from the therapist or not. Hemi-Sync® is designed to leave control in the hands of the listener as well. In this sense, it's somewhat related to self-hypnosis. Hemi-Sync® does not "make" you do anything. It simply creates an effect that helps you move into a certain state, providing that you relax and are open to responding to the Hemi-Sync® process.

Q: Are Hemi-Sync® products subliminal?
A: No. Subliminal recordings have the intention of embedding a particular thought in the mind of the listener by recording words at sub audible levels, often at high speeds. Hemi-Sync® sound patterns, although recorded at a sub audible level, are not verbal messages and are not recorded at high speed. The purpose of Hemi-Sync® sound patterns is to assist you in obtaining the focused brain state you desire.

Q: Some Hemi-Sync® products have sections in which the voice is too low for me to understand. Isn't that subliminal? Or is it a defect in the product?
A: No to both questions. By the time the voice becomes low in volume, you are in an extremely relaxed state or perhaps asleep. The words you may not understand are simply a repetition of earlier sections of the recording. They are repeated for purposes of reinforcement, at a very low volume so as not to interfere with your state of relaxation.

Q: Is Hemi-Sync® recommended for children?
A: All nonverbal recordings are fine for children. With verbally guided titles, we recommend you listen first and then decide based on your child's level of maturity.

Q: How does Hemi-Sync® Compare To Other Products?
A: We occasionally receive inquiries from individuals desiring to know how Hemi-Sync® compares to other brain wave products they may have heard about. It would be inappropriate for us to comment on specific products or technologies but following are some observations we can make with regard to Hemi-Sync:
• Robert Monroe's pioneering work with hemispheric synchronization (Hemi-Sync) sound patterns inspired an entire industry of mind/brain products and technologies.
• Hemi-Sync is a technologically sophisticated process that has been awarded three U.S. patents.
• With millions of products sold worldwide, Hemi-Sync® has been shown to be a highly effective, safe, time-proven technology.
• Improving the efficacy of Hemi-Sync® has been a continually evolving process—which we have remained committed. Today's Hemi-Sync® has been refined with over 50 years of research and development and is supported by numerous studies, reports, articles and testimonials available at www.Hemi-Sync.com. Hemi-Sync® has been scientifically and clinically proven to be effective.
• Over the years, the Hemi-Sync® process has evolved into a sophisticated multi-layering of Hemi-Sync® signals—"designer mixes" of sound frequencies, fashioned to be optimally effective for a given application. Naturally, Hemi-Sync® sleep products incorporate predominately delta frequencies; learning products predominately beta and so forth. However, these designer mixes are supplemented with special sound frequencies which enable the desired result. This is the "key" to the effectiveness of Hemi-Sync.
• Ongoing Hemi-Sync® research has resulted in the development of scores of individual products for specific applications such as focused attention, stress reduction, meditation, sleep enhancement, and pain control, to name a few. Other Hemi-Sync® products are available as a series (some of which are progressive in nature) such as the Gateway Experience® In-Home training program for exploring states of consciousness.
• We do not recommend using Hemi-Sync® in combination with other devices or technologies that influence brain activity.

Equipment

Q: What kind of equipment is required to listen to Hemi-Sync®?
A: A moderately priced stereo player, including portable CD players will work fine. Top-of-the-line equipment is not required for Hemi-Sync® to work. Headphones are recommended for best results, and a good set of headphones will contribute to your enjoyment. Headphones that enclose the ear are preferred to reduce ambient room noise and provide a more distraction-free experience.

Q: Will conventional speakers work as well as headphones?
A: You can use either. The greater the separation between the sounds introduced into each ear, the stronger the Hemi-Sync® effect. We generally recommend using earphones for experiential exercises, because earphones maximize the sound separation and tend to block out exterior noise. Speakers are also fine, and in fact may be preferable when you are playing Metamusic® or other nonverbal titles as background while engaged in another activity. Be in the same room as the speakers. To enhance the separation between the sounds, it is recommended to position yourself between the speakers, when possible.

Q: How can I use earphones if I'm only comfortable lying on my stomach or side? And, what about getting tangled in the wires?
A: You may wish to try "earbuds", which are designed to fit comfortably inside the ear. Earbuds are available at many stores that sell stereo equipment. Alternatively, use conventional speakers, placed on either side of your bed or try a stereo sleep pillow.

Cautions and Disclaimer

While many of our audio products contribute to wellness, they are not intended to replace medical diagnosis and treatment. DO NOT listen to Hemi-Sync® while driving or operating heavy equipment, or with other devices that may influence brain wave activity. If you have a tendency towards seizures, auditory disorders, or other adverse mental condition(s) DO NOT listen to Hemi-Sync® without first consulting your physician. In the unlikely event that you experience any unusual physical or mental discomfort, immediately discontinue use. ALL WARRANTIES WHETHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ARE DISCLAIMED.

Q: Why am I not supposed to listen to Hemi-Sync® in my car?
A: When driving, you should pay attention to the road. It's not advisable to move into other states of consciousness.

Q: Why am I not supposed to listen to Hemi-Sync® if I have a tendency towards seizures?
A: Seizures result from abnormal brainwave activity. Hemi-Sync's influence on brainwave activity might not be beneficial for someone with that tendency.

Q: Is there a problem in making copies of Hemi-Sync® products for friends?
A: Yes. Hemi-Sync® products are copyrighted. You would be breaking federal laws and therefore be liable to prosecution.

Series

Q: What's the difference between Human Plus®, Mind Food®, Heart-Sync® and Metamusic®?
A: Human Plus recordings teach you how to activate the benefit of a particular selection whenever you wish without listening at the particular moment when you desire the intended effect. For example, the Human Plus title, Attention, exercise teaches you how to move into a highly focused state when not listening to the Attention exercise. Most Mind Food and Heart-Sync titles provide the experience/benefit while you are listening. For example, the Mind Food title, Concentration, helps your brain move into a highly focused state of concentration while listening. Metamusic® selections contain music and Hemi-Sync® with no verbal guidance.

Q: What product will enable me to have an out-of-body experience?
A: An OBE cannot be guaranteed. Your ability to experience an OBE depends on many factors unique to every individual, like personal beliefs, possible fear barriers, etc. If you are interested in an OBE, we recommend Hemi-Sync® Support for Journeys Out of the Body or the Gateway Experience series.

The Listening Experience

Q: What if I fall asleep while listening?
A: That's fine. The benefits of Hemi-Sync® are achieved with or without your conscious awareness. Many Hemi-Sync® exercises help you achieve a hypnogogic state, that borderline state between deep relaxation and sleep so it's possible you may drift into sleep. If you want to familiarize yourself with the verbal content of an exercise, listen once, without headphones, while seated in a chair.

Q: I hear a hissing noise on some of the products. Is that a defect?
A: No, what you are hearing is "pink sound" (sometimes described as a swishing sound). It is a combination of all the frequencies the human ear can perceive, with higher and lower frequencies adjusted to be equal in volume. Pink sound enhances the perception of the Hemi-Sync® sound patterns, and therefore plays a valuable role on certain Hemi-Sync® products. Dolby® noise reduction attempts to filter out the pink sound. Therefore, it is important not to use Dolby®, or other noise reduction systems, when listening to Hemi-Sync® audio products on tape.

Q: Am I supposed to "see" things when I listen to Hemi-Sync®?
A: "Supposed to" really doesn't apply. There are many ways of perceiving; visualizing is only one of them. Many people experience a physical response to Hemi-Sync® and become aware of different body sensations; other people have sensations of hearing or tasting, or simply "knowing." Enjoy your experience, whatever it is.

Q: How do I know if I'm getting the intended effect?
A: Everyone is unique. Your Hemi-Sync® experience may differ from the experience of others. In fact, your experience may be different each time you listen to a particular exercise. Just relax and trust that your experience is right for you at the time.

Q: Is Hemi-Sync® beneficial for experienced meditators?
A: Yes. Many long-term meditators report that Hemi-Sync® helps them move more quickly and reliably into a meditative state. Experienced meditators also report that they seem to "go deeper," and sustain the meditative state longer when using Hemi-Sync.

Q: What if I don't feel awake and alert after listening to Hemi-Sync®?
A: Certain Hemi-Sync® products are designed to leave you in a sleep state. However, if a non-sleep recording leaves you feeling a little "spacey", here are some grounding techniques to try: slowly count down from 10 to 1; drink cold water; splash cool water on your face and neck; run cold water on your wrists; weather permitting, walk barefoot outdoors while you breathe deeply.

Q: How many times should I listen to an exercise to get the effect or benefit?
A: Generally, you will feel the influence of Hemi-Sync® the first time you listen. However, some products are designed as a training series. These products typically work best when you listen multiple times to reinforce and anchor the intended benefit. All Human Plus selections and the Gateway Experience series fall into this category. Specific listening instructions are included with your purchase of these items.

SAM Frequently Asked Questions

Q: For the new Spatial Angle Modulation™ (SAM) downloads it is suggested that I make a choice of left-brain dominant, balanced, or right-brain dominant ... why?
A: SAM technology can focus its influence. Neurologically, our brain hemispheres are primarily connected to the opposite sides of our bodies. When a SAM arc is on the left it primarily affects the right hemisphere. So if you are right-brain dominant a SAM arc is placed on the left to quiet the right hemisphere. But you won't be able to consciously hear the difference. If you are left-brain dominant a SAM arc is placed on the right to quiet the left hemisphere. And if you have a balanced hemispheric preference, a SAM arc is centered.

Q: Does the SAM arc input into the left ear get processed by the right hemisphere? Does the SAM arc input into the right ear get processed by the left hemisphere?
A: In general, as with the rest of the body, it is true that the primary auditory cortex of each hemisphere processes input from the opposite ear. So sounds coming into the left ear are processed by the right hemisphere, and vice versa. The primary auditory cortex can be found on the surface of the temporal lobes.

However, that's not the whole story. If you go back and examine the figure above, you'll notice that the signals from the ears are carried by cranial nerve eight, the vestibulocochlear nerve, which controls the inner ear, and cranial nerve ten, the vagus nerve, which controls, among other things, the outer ear. Since cranial nerves communicate with both the left and right hemispheres, then the primary auditory cortices do receive input from both ears, though most of the input is from the contralateral ear. This is designed as a safety mechanism. If there was a lesion affecting only the left auditory cortex, the right ear would not become entirely deaf.

Q: How can I find out my hemispheric preference?
A: Take the brain dominance quiz.

Q: Can I put the CDs on my iPod or other MP3 portable players?
A: Absolutely! These applications have been tested in the Bob Monroe Research Lab to make sure the special audio signals remain consistent when compressed. You first have to rip the CD to your computer. Be sure to use "Apple Lossless" conversion on your computer for your iPod/iPad.

Q: What should I do if I feel not quite awake and alert after listening to an exercise?
A: There are many effective methods for grounding. You can slowly count from 10 to 1; drink cool water; take a cold shower or splash cold water on your face, neck and wrists. Weather permitting, walk barefoot outdoors, taking deep breaths and releasing excess energy through your feet. While outside, place your back against a tree and imagine energy flowing from your head to the branches above and from your feet to the tree's roots and down into the very center of the earth's core.

Q: Will I always need to use the audio-guidance programs?
A: Absolutely not. They are like training wheels on a bicycle: wonderful for practice but possibly inhibiting as you learn to ride far and free.

Q: What if I fall asleep when I listen?
A: There may be times when you "click out" of the exercise, especially as you begin to move up to and beyond your level of experience. Clicking-out is different from falling asleep. There is a sense of having dropped out of the exercise. Upon returning to or finishing the exercise, there is no perception of time having passed. You will have stored the memory of your experience but will have no immediate recall. Clicking-out is a common, frequently reported experience. When you have progressed to a given stage it won't happen and you will have total recall. Meanwhile, try putting the idea or picture of sleep in your Energy Conversion Box. If you are still falling asleep, try sitting up during the exercise. And finally practice, practice, practice! It is through patience and continued practice that you learn to maintain balance in the hypnagogic state between deep relaxation and sleep.

Q: What should I do when various images or dreamlike thoughts interfere with what I'm trying to do?
A: Do not suppress or force the images away. Rather, acknowledge them without getting involved with them; otherwise you may fall into a sleep state. Look at them and let them go. You can always go back to them later.

Q: I am not able or willing to vocalize with the Resonant Tuning. I go into a very deep relaxed state and my mouth doesn't seem to want to work. I either sing along in my head, click-out, or start some kind of thought dream. What should I do?
A: It is important to discipline yourself to participate in Resonant Tuning because this is a method which will help you perceive nonphysical energy. Resonant Tuning promotes an accelerated gathering of your vibrational energy while reducing internal dialogue. Discomfort about vocalizing will eventually wane.

Q: When using the technology, I am aware of a buzzing pressure in my forehead and also an acceleration of my heartbeat. Is this normal?
A: A light buzzing or pressure happens frequently to some people. It means that you are responding to the audio-guidance process. However, if you are experiencing a great degree of discomfort, you may have the volume too loud. For best results, the volume should be just loud enough for you to hear the verbal instructions. Remember, you are expanding your state of awareness; consequently, you are more conscious of your heartbeat, breathing, etc. This is a phenomenon common to the shift in energy levels such as the shift from Consciousness 1 to Focus™ 10.

Q: I don't seem to feel the high-energy states and have trouble visualizing. What should they feel like?
A: Everyone perceives his/her experiences in a different way, so these high-energy states will not necessarily be visual. Some people report seeing light, color, and form, but others quite frequently perceive sensations. You may experience vibration(s), or what seems to be an electric tingling, or a shaking of your body, bed, or room. Some people hear a rushing sound, buzzing, voices, verbal messages, or even music. Others may just "know" when they have achieved these states. Just relax and observe your own perceptions without judging how you should feel.

Q: Is God appearing when I see a flood of light during an exercise?
A: The perception of light suggests that your potential for nonphysical awareness is developing but it is up to you to decide on its meaning. Such light is widely reported by explorers of higher consciousness and people who have had near-death experiences. It is often accompanied by euphoria, a feeling of oneness with the universe, and a sense of overwhelming love. A Buddhist might associate this with Buddha; a Christian with Christ. The Monroe Institute does not endorse any particular interpretation and encourages you to find your own.

Q: Why not combine mind-altering drugs with the audio-guidance process?
A: These exercises train you to take control over your states of consciousness. Drugs often interfere with that control. Also, your interpretations and understanding of your experiences will likely be more accurate without the unpredictable influences of drugs or other mind-altering substances.

Q: Are TMI's methods useful for experienced meditators or people who have long practice in other disciplines?
A: The many such people who participate say, "Definitely yes!" They appreciate such benefits as the speed and ease of attaining the expanded state; the ability to sustain the state; the tools and guidelines for exploration. The process seems to meet people wherever they are in their development and assists them in moving forward into even deeper levels of self-discovery.

Q: Sometimes during an audio exercise I feel so much energy in my body that it actually gets uncomfortable and I want to come out of the exercised. What should I do about this?
A: Realize that the energy you are feeling is second-state energy, the nonphysical energy which you first need to perceive before you can consciously use it. Welcome the energy. Observe the energy move through your whole body. Wait and see if it speeds up or slows down. Express gratitude for the conscious experience of the energy. Question the energy - ask (silently in your mind) if there is a message for you in the experience of the energy. The fact that you are perceiving this energy is indicative that you are reaching an expanded state of consciousness.

Q: I usually sleep on my side or stomach and feel insecure sprawled out on my back. Also, I cannot remain on my back very long without getting restless. What should I do?
A: You may try sitting upright in a comfortable chair or in your bed while listening. Some people report that they prefer sitting up because they're less likely to drop off to sleep. Also, if you have a comfortable set of "ear-bud" headphones, you might be able to arrange pillows so that you can listen while lying on your side or stomach. Ear-buds are readily available at stores carrying stereo products.

Q: Even while in Focus 10, I am aware of my breathing. This makes it impossible for me to detach myself or otherwise perceive the high-energy states. Any suggestions?
A: This is a very normal reaction. Actually, it can enhance your experience if used in a positive way. It's your breathing that helps charge you with energy (hence, the Resonant Tuning exercise) and prepares you for moving to high-energy states. Be aware of what is happening to you and just let it be - don't fight it. You can be aware of your breathing and of the audio exercise. You can always put the worries about your breathing in your Energy Conversion Box if you want. Once you convince yourself that breathing is a normal process and not a problem, the awareness of breathing should disappear by itself. Some even find their breathing or their heartbeat a comforting link to physical reality and then can move more confidently into other states of consciousness.

Q: Thus far, I have not been able to visualize my REBAL energy coming from my head and bending around to my feet. I'm stuck.
A: Remember that visualization is only one way of perceiving. Not everyone is adept at mental images. Perhaps you can feel or know that you are forming your Resonant Energy Balloon (REBAL). Imagine that you are surrounded by and filled with tingling, sparkling, brilliant bursts of energy. If you have practiced the technique often, you are possibly forming the REBAL without even being aware of it. "Popping" your REBAL frequently without using the audio-guidance technology will strengthen it. The REBAL is a valuable tool.

Q: I have been using the technology and do get some interesting things but I would be more pleased if I knew that I was getting what was intended.
A: As we read the correspondence that comes to the Institute, listen to your phone calls, and review your website comments, one of the clearest messages that comes across to all of us is that no two individuals' experiences are alike. They range from the cosmic to the mundane and yet are almost invariably of real meaning and significance to the person having the experience. Trust the process and know that whatever experience you have, it is just exactly what is best for you to achieve your divine right purpose.

Q: What if I am not experiencing the out-of-body state?
A: Many of us have hidden (subconscious) fears that prevent us from experiencing this perceptual venue. Others try so hard that the intense effort blocks this experience. The best way to succeed is to relax, let go of expectations, and become nonchalant about it. After all, the classic OBE is just a small part of learning to expand and experience your full potential. Keep working with the exercises. Trust the process. You may find yourself experiencing the out-of-body perceptual state when you least expect it.

Q: How can I control or direct my perceptions during the out-of-body experience?
A: The words control and direct are usually associated with body-oriented ego states. If you set a goal before you begin your OBE, you won't need to decide what to do once you are in the experience. Experiment with thinking of someone and contacting his/her energy, rather than arriving at a geographic destination. Any time you wish to return to your in-the-body perceptions, all you need do is think of your body and/or move a finger or toe. In most cases, after a period of time your bladder will demand your attention and return your perceptual perspective to the physical body.

Q: How many times should I use each CD before going on to the next?
A: That can vary greatly with the individual. You should be familiar and comfortable with an exercise before advancing to the next one. However, don't feel you must master it completely. There may be challenges for an individual with a specific technique that can diminish or disappear with practice or exposure to a more advanced exercise. Of course, don't hesitate to review any of the CDs for reinforcement.

Q: I understand that after a while we really do not need the CDs to achieve different states of consciousness. How do I remember the signals?
A: It is true that with practice, you do not need the CD exercises to reach expanded states of consciousness. After you become proficient with an exercise, all you need to do is recall the sensations you experienced during what you consider to be your best, most effective response in the desired states. Simply take a deep breath and remember the state to trigger the change in consciousness.

On the Technical Side

Q: What are binaural beats?
A: Binaural beating is demonstrated in a simple way by placing a steady tone in one ear, then a different steady tone in the other ear. As these different tones are blended together in the brain, the binaural beat or wavering sound you hear is a brain-produced phenomenon. When carefully designed and skillfully introduced, such signals can stimulate specific states of consciousness, which are automatically learned and can then be recreated from memory.

Q: Is it important to have the earphones on the correct ear as instructed on some of the exercises?
A: No. As long as you are using stereo equipment, the intended effect will be achieved. Be sure your earphones are comfortable.

Q: Is the guidance process like hypnosis?
A: Yes, they are similar. Hypnosis is an induced, altered state of mind, in which the body is deeply relaxed, sufficient to be temporarily ignored, except for demands like bladder fullness, etc. It is sometimes described as "focused concentration." This "state" is one in which the participant has perhaps even more control over the body and self than in "ordinary" states of consciousness. Witness the fact that hypnosis is sometimes used for pain control in minor surgeries, childbirth, and even dentistry. It is an expanded state of awareness, in which one can be fully aware of the sensory data from the environment (sound, light, temperature, etc.), and at the same time can develop awareness of other data sources as well, such as past lives, out-of-body information, information from guides, one's inner self, etc. Neither state can "make" you DO anything. You are able to maintain your faculties for choice and value systems, including choosing to follow suggestions from the therapist or not. TMI's guidance process is designed to leave control in the hands of the listener as well. In this sense, it's somewhat related to self-hypnosis. The process does not "make" you do anything. It simply creates an effect that helps you move into a certain state, providing that you relax and are open to responding to the guidance process and the special audio signals.

Q: Are program recordings subliminal?
A: No. "Subliminal" implies that a specific verbal message is recorded below audible level and often at high speed. The intention is to embed a particular thought in the mind of the listener. (The notion that such a concept works has never been demonstrated scientifically.) Several program recordings contain sleep periods during which verbal guidance is recorded at a very low level so as not to awaken the listener. The script during these periods is a repetition of the information heard previously.

Q: How can I convince a skeptic?
A: Without interest and desire, the openness that leads to success will be lacking. In other words: There is no such thing as convincing a skeptic. It would be better to let your own personal growth speak for you. As you become calmer, more centered, more confident, more creative, more intuitive, etc., people close to you will notice and will want to know why. It may be useful to emphasize what you have learned rather than the experiences themselves. When it is appropriate to describe your experiences, try to relate them to something familiar to the ones with whom you are sharing. Another approach is introducing a more mainstream exercise such as Catnapper or Concentration. Experiencing and discussing the practical benefits in daily life can build a foundation for greater openness and self-discovery.

Personal Resources Exploration Program (PREP)

The Personal Resources Exploration Program, or PREP, is a personalized auditory-guidance session conducted in a specially designed, secluded cubical. The PREP session is introduced as an aspect of the Guidelines® program. Graduates of the Guidelines program are eligible to participate in additional PREP sessions at a later time. Although PREP sessions have gained a reputation over the last twenty years for providing intense personal experiences, they should not be thought of as a shortcut or as a means to an experience that has not otherwise been available to you. Stated another way, if you are already experiential using the Monroe audio-guidance technology, the PREP session is your next step.

How does a PREP session work?

A participant is supported throughout the uniquely personalized session with customized, computer-generated sounds and verbal guidance provided by a trained facilitator.

The sessions consist of three parts:

First, you will spend some time talking with your facilitator, gaining clarity on your goals and objectives for the session. You may wish to give some thought to what you would like to accomplish and explore prior to arriving for your session. Goals have ranged broadly from the more general, "I would like to be more consciously aware of the energies/guidance around me" to working with very specific personal issues. External electrodes will be attached to several of your fingers enabling the monitoring and recording of physiological measurements of your skin temperature, galvanic skin response, and skin potential voltage. Then you will be assisted to lie comfortably on the special dry-flotation system in the booth and then put on the headphones. A microphone in the booth allows for two-way communication between you and the facilitator at all times and for recording your narrative of the events of your experience.

Second, the facilitator will remain outside of the booth at the control station. When you are ready, the audio-guidance will be introduced to you through the headphones, and the facilitator will begin to guide you on a journey. As your personal exploration unfolds, adjustments in the audio-guidance signals will be made in order to facilitate and enhance your experience.

Third, at the conclusion of your guided exploration, you will be assisted from the booth for a debriefing. At this time, you may gain further understanding and integration of your experience and continue the grounding process. A CD of the narrative of your session and printouts of your physiological responses will be given to you before your departure. The entire session, including your intake interview, guided exploration, and debriefing, will take approximately two hours.

PREP sessions, for graduates of the Guidelines program, may be arranged by calling (434) 361-1252 for an appointment or contact TMI. Cost of the session is $250.00.

PREP Session Physiological Monitoring

A Personal Resources Exploration Program (PREP) session is a uniquely personalized audio-guidance process. We use a J&J I-300-C2 Physiological Monitoring System during PREP sessions to monitor skin potential voltage (SPV), peripheral skin temperature (TEMP), and galvanic skin response (GSR).

The following explanations describe these measurements and illustrate how we interpret and use them during PREP sessions. The graphs illustrate general tendencies and should not be held as goals for an “ideal" session. Highly individualized patterns are interpreted on a case-by-case basis using established parameters.

Electrical activity on the skin has two origins: that due to sweat gland activity (sudorific) and that due to other causes (non-sudorific). It is important to discriminate between the two origins. Sudorific skin potentials (see Figure 3 – GSR) have long been associated with levels of anxiety, mental arousal, and emotional reactivity. Non-sudorific skin potentials (see Figure 1 – SPV) have been associated with ovulation, tissue regeneration and atypical growth, as well as changes in consciousness.

SPV: The direct current voltage between two electrodes on the fingers is measured. Voltage differences of relative short duration are referred to as skin-potential responses. Voltage differences of long duration are referred to as skin-potential levels. Records of both of these non-sudorific electric variables are called skin potential voltage (SPV) measurements. Independent SPV response variations or waveforms indicate subjective mental activity. Changes in consciousness are indicated by substantial changes in SPV levels. Occasionally, SPV levels reverse polarity. These polarity reversals indicate changes in the participant's perspective or venue. Figure 1 – SPV shows changes in skin-potential levels during a PREP session. In this illustration, a polarity reversal (+ to -) is recorded early into the session.

Figure 1 – SPV

TEMP: Warming of the extremities (hands and feet) is a strong indicator of physical relaxation. This peripheral warming is due to increased blood flow through the capillaries as a result of muscular relaxation. This natural warming is sometimes referred to as the relaxation response. Peripheral warming is also a reliable indication associated with theta brainwave states. Individuals have been known to move into a theta brainwave rhythm during peripheral warming to 95oF for a few minutes. During PREP sessions, hand and finger temperature generally rises as states of consciousness favorable to perceptual experiences arise. Figure 2 – TEMP shows typical warming during a PREP session.

Figure 2 – TEMP

GSR: In the case of sudorific activity, skin resistance or its inverse, skin conductance, is measured by applying a small, constant current through two electrodes placed on the fingers. Changes in resistance of short duration typically reach a peak in about one or two seconds and are referred to as galvanic skin responses (GSR). The general amount of resistance that changes slowly is called the skin-resistance level. As GSR conductance decreases, an individual becomes less anxious, mentally calm, and emotionally passive. Figure 3 – GSR illustrates the changing skin-conductance level during a PREP session.

Figure 3 – GSR

The use of physiological monitoring is especially beneficial to real-time facilitation of PREP sessions. Monitors can tell when an individual is relaxed, when that individual "moves" from experience to experience, and when to inquire about their perceptions and understandings. After a PREP session, the participants are provided a complete report of their physiological changes during their session.

Facilities

Residential programs at the Virginia Campus are conducted at Nancy Penn Center and at Roberts Mountain Retreat. Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, these facilities were constructed to maximize the effectiveness of the audio-guidance process and provide a uniquely supportive environment for personal exploration.

Specially designed CHEC units (Controlled Holistic Environmental Chambers) provide isolation from light and outside sounds. Participants relax in solitude and it is here the learning adventure begins.

Guided by experienced facilitators, an audio network feeds audio exercises to headphones and speakers in each unit. The CHEC unit is also used as a place for sleep.

A sensory deprivation chamber exists at each center. Equipped for physiological monitoring of individuals exploring expanded states of awareness, these are used for private sessions and research. PREP Sessions are available during residential programs and by appointment.

Nancy Penn Center

This residential center houses 24 participants with a dining room, exercise room, massage room, several meeting rooms and space for relaxation. The roof deck offers panoramic views of the Blue Ridge and the stars at night.

Program participants can enjoy forest walking trails, meditation spots along a creek and atop the ridges, and swimming in Lake Miranon. Evening presentations are held in David Francis Hall, complete with audiovisual facilities for large-screen film and video production.

Roberts Mountain Retreat

Robert and Nancy Monroe's former home has been transformed to accommodate 20 participants to navigate their inner landscapes in a comfortable and inviting setting.

Participants attend sessions in the log cabin where Bob Monroe worked and wrote his third book, Ultimate Journey. Nature trails and a swimming pool offer exercise and relaxation.

Who is Bob Monroe?

Robert Monroe was a successful and distinguished business executive, dedicated family man, and noted pioneer in the investigation of human consciousness. He also invented Hemi-Sync® and founded The Monroe Institute®, a worldwide organization dedicated to expanding human potential.

Born in Indiana on October 30, 1915 to a college professor father and medical doctor mother and raised in Lexington, Kentucky, Robert Monroe was the third of four children.

After a childhood spent in Kentucky and Indiana, he attended Ohio State University. Upon graduating in 1937 with a BA in English, Monroe worked as a writer and director at two Ohio radio stations. Two years later he moved to New York and expanded his broadcasting career, producing and directing weekly radio programs and eventually forming his own radio production company. During the 1950s his company was producing 28 radio shows per month, including the popular Take a Number and Meet Your Match quiz shows. At this time Monroe became well known as a composer of music for radio, television, and motion pictures.

He also served as vice president and member of the board of directors for the Mutual Broadcasting System network, was listed in Who's Who in America, and was publicized in magazine and newspaper articles on flying and radio production. Building on this success, Monroe's production company acquired several radio stations in North Carolina and Virginia, and later moved into developing cable television systems.

In 1956 the firm set up a research and development division to study the effects of various sound patterns on human consciousness, including the feasibility of learning during sleep. Never one to ask others to do something he would not, Monroe often used himself as a test subject for this research. In 1958, a significant result emerged—Monroe began experiencing a state of consciousness separate and apart from the physical body. He described the state as an "out of body experience," the term coined by Charles T. Tart, Ph.D. a leader in the area of consciousness studies. These spontaneous experiences altered the course of Monroe's life and the direction of his professional efforts.

While continuing his successful broadcasting activities, Monroe began to experiment and research the expanded forms of human consciousness that he was experiencing. He chronicled his early explorations with a reporter's objectivity and eye for detail in a groundbreaking book, Journeys Out of the Body, which was published in 1971. This public record of his out of body experiences in states beyond space, time, and death has comforted countless people who've encountered paranormal incidents. It also attracted the attention of academic researchers, medical practitioners, engineers, and other professionals.

Ever the pragmatic business leader, Monroe, and a growing group of fellow researchers, began to work on methods of inducing and controlling this and other forms of consciousness in a laboratory setting. This research led to the development of a noninvasive and easy to use audio-guidance technology known as hemispheric synchronization or Hemi-Sync®. In 1974, the original research group was expanded to become The Monroe Institute, an organization dedicated to conducting seminars in the control and exploration of human consciousness. A year later, Monroe was issued the first of three patents for "Frequency Following Response" or FFR, which is part of the Hemi-Sync® method of altering brain states through sound.

Throughout the next 20 years Monroe continued to explore, research, and teach others about expanded states of human consciousness and practical methods of enhancing human potential. He developed a series of multi-day workshops that enable participants to personally experience realms beyond physical time-space reality, built a campus for teaching and research, and created a portfolio of audio exercises designed to focus attention, reduce stress, improve meditation, enhance sleep, and manage pain among other applications.

In 1985 he wrote a second book, titled Far Journeys, which expanded upon his personal investigations of nonphysical reality. In 1994 he followed suit with a third book, Ultimate Journey, which explores basic truths about the meaning and purpose of life and what lies beyond the limits of our physical world. Monroe died in 1995, at the age of 79. His legacy continues today and has touched the lives of literally millions of people all around the world.

If you attended the Gateway Voyage residential program at The Monroe Institute in the last 10 to 15 years, you missed the evening talks with Bob Monroe. Prior to his death in 1995, Bob talked with Gateway Voyage participants on Saturday evenings, their first night at the Institute, and on Wednesday evenings after they had experienced the exploration of Focus 21, a bridge to other realities. Wednesdays talks were particularly precious to participants as they had experienced for themselves by that time the very realms Bob spoke of during those Wednesday evening discussions.

Here is a collection of nine clips that together constitute one of Bob Monroe's Wednesday night talks in 1990. Bob didn't like to be filmed, so we are fortunate to still have this classic footage.

The Monroe Institute

Our Vision

The Global Awakening of Humanity

Our Mission

To enhance worldwide cooperative efforts in furthering the exploration of consciousness, expanded awareness, and discovery of self.

The Monroe Institute provides experiential education programs facilitating the personal exploration of human consciousness. Over the last 30+ years, tens of thousands of people have attended the Institute’s residential and outreach programs, and millions have benefited from our educational materials. The Institute admits students of any race, color, creed, and national or ethnic origin.

The Monroe Institute also serves as the core of a research affiliation investigating the evolution of human consciousness and making related information available to the public. The Institute is devoted to the premise that focused consciousness contains solutions to the major issues of human experience.

A greater understanding of such consciousness can be achieved through coordinated research efforts using an interdisciplinary approach.  For this reason the Institute is working in collaboration with researchers and clinicians in many areas, especially through university and clinical collaborations and our Professional membership and Board of Advisors.

The results of such research efforts are meaningful only if there are practical applications—something of value for our contemporary culture. As a nonprofit educational and research organization dedicated to the exploration of human consciousness, the Institute proposes to introduce or enhance abilities that will constructively change humankind’s direction and destiny.

Ours is a mission of service in which we use the technology created at The Monroe Institute to better the lives of all those we can reach.  Bob Monroe wanted to provide something of value to humanity, help people lead better and more fulfilling lives.

We strive to carry out that legacy by reaching out to communities that can benefit from this technology, not only those who are able to come to our programs.   We are working on several projects with this intent.

The Monroe Institute serves as the core of a research affiliation investigating the evolution of human consciousness and making related information available to the public. The Monroe Institute also provides experiential education programs facilitating the personal exploration of human consciousness.
