It is said that music is the gateway to the soul. What is meant by this? Well, music seems to ignite deeper passions within us. It allows us to connect to more of an emotive state that we may not always be able to access. Studies have shown that music can activate the pleasure center in the brain, lower stress, release dopamine, and opens us to a greater sense of connection with the world around us. That’s why, when the Expand app began offering unguided meditations with music, I was excited to jump on board for every musical journey I could find. On a deep dive into the Expand app recently, I was pleased to find and connect with “Ocean Consciousness” by Robot Koch.

Music connects me to my emotions in a way I seldom feel otherwise. As someone who has been a singer since I was a child, I’ve regularly found myself bursting into song to connect to some deep source, only to end up crying. As I reenact my favorite musicals, I’ll find myself rejoicing, crying, laughing, or belting depending upon the tune. It instantly and powerfully connects me to the emotions I am looking to access in a way I never could without it. Is it the breath control, the powerful vocal vibrations, or how I’m emoting when I sing? I’m not sure. All I know is that it allows me to deeply and richly feel.

So, as I began listening to “Ocean Consciousness,” I was excited for whatever adventure would unfold, knowing that these musical experiences enhanced with Monroe Sound Science are always powerful journeys that connect me to a source deep within myself.

Music connects me to my emotions in a way I seldom feel otherwise. As someone who has been a singer since I was a child, I’ve regularly found myself bursting into song to connect to some deep source, only to end up crying.

What I love most about these musical experiences is that they are always vastly different for me each time I conduct one, and they are always distinctly visual journeys. This one was no different; however, it added another exciting layer, one I hadn’t experienced before. As the music began to pick up the tempo, I felt my energy body begin to dance. It was so real that I physically felt it, this sweeping sensation of energy dancing around my physical body. However, this energy body, dancing full force, was able to do all the moves I physically cannot—things I could do when I was younger but haven’t been able to in years. Feeling this source of flowing and swirling energy around my otherwise motionless body was unique because I usually experience these meditations in a visual way. This was the first time I had had such intense movement added to it, a flow of energy circling in a beautiful dance I couldn’t recreate if I wanted to. It felt freeing as I let go and allowed my energy to dance and swirl. It felt healing and perfectly playful; a feeling I needed more than anything else.

This exercise was a reminder that we will experience what we need in meditation at any given time. It was also a reminder that we will regularly surprise ourselves. I encourage you to try some of the musically driven exercises in the Expand app to see how you respond to them. They are my favorite adventures to conduct.
