Modern Meditation in the Business World
Meditation has not only become a common tool to help people maintain balanced lives, but it’s also become rather popular. Gone are the days when meditation was thought of only as a method of spiritual gurus. We now find high-ranking executives practicing regular meditation and hiring wellness coaches to bring more balance into their stressful lives.
According to the National Business Group on Health, roughly 52 percent of companies discuss mindfulness practices with their employees! So, meditation is becoming increasingly common, even in the business world.
It seems like only yesterday that people would hesitate when I mentioned that I meditated. Now, with meditation popping up throughout our modern culture, it’s a common activity that most people expect themselves and others to practice. Now, in fact, according to several studies, when you mention to someone that you meditate, they’re highly likely to see you as a healthier and more well-rounded individual. According to the National Business Group on Health, roughly 52 percent of companies discuss mindfulness practices with their employees! So, meditation is becoming increasingly common, even in the business world.
Arianna Huffington ... has written 15 books to date, many of which discuss wellness, and meditation being a part of wellness, and she has also successfully coached many executives.
This could be, in part, thanks to professionals such as Arianna Huffington who have brought the idea of meditation to mainstream executive professionals. As the founder of The Huffington Post and the founder and CEO of Thrive Global, Huffington seemingly understands the challenges of being a businessperson under regular high stress. She has written 15 books to date, many of which discuss wellness, and meditation being a part of wellness, and she has also successfully coached many executives.
On another side of things, while mindfulness has been around for centuries, with the rise of the internet it has just recently become a household practice in the United States. With the huge success of Headspace, created by Buddhist Monk Andy Puddicombe and marketer Richard Pierson, mindfulness became a quick and easy tool to carry with you on your phone so you can have guided mindfulness sessions anywhere. This is, perhaps, another reason why meditation has become such a sensation. In my former office, my peers and I would conduct weekly mindfulness sessions together.
So, maybe it’s thanks to the internet (and our smartphones) that Arianna Huffington, The Huffington Post, and Headspace were able to easily spread to the business world the relevance of meditation. Perhaps the internet is partially responsible for meditation becoming so widely accepted in our present culture.
...society is quickly recognizing meditation as an important tool for health and wellness in the business world.
Whatever the reason, I am so thankful that meditation is becoming more and more common. I’m even more thankful that society is quickly recognizing meditation as an important tool for health and wellness in the business world. After all, if it’s successful enough for all those high-ranking executives, it’s good enough for us!
It’s extremely important to live balanced lives. As someone who usually bites off more than she can chew, I rely on meditation to help me clear my head, prioritize my days, and set ideal goals for myself. Plus, it’s a release that allows me to relax! So, whether you’re someone leading a business, someone working for that leader, someone working on a line or a work-at-home parent, meditation is for you! We all have priorities that need to be sorted out, and we all have a need to get some peace and relaxation in.
