About the Monroe Institute
The Monroe Institute, a pioneering non-profit organization, is dedicated to the exploration of expanded consciousness. We develop groundbreaking audio technologies designed to facilitate profound meditative and transformative experiences, reaching a global community of consciousness explorers.
About the role
We're looking for a detail-obsessed QA specialist to own quality across our Expand mobile app and our web platform.
The Monroe Institute is a small nonprofit dedicated to the exploration of human consciousness. Our software team ships a lot, fast, with heavy help from AI tools. That pace only works if someone is checking everything carefully before it reaches our members. That someone is you.
You don't need to be a software developer. You do need to be comfortable with technology, able to read and edit test code, and able to talk shop with developers. We use AI heavily, including Claude Code, to write and maintain tests. What we can't teach is the instinct to notice when something is slightly off, and the drive to chase it down.
What you'll do
Own quality across mobile and web
- Test every release of the Expand app (built with React Native and Expo) on iOS and Android, on both simulators and real devices.
- Test our web platform across browsers and screen sizes.
- Run, maintain and expand our automated test suites: Maestro for mobile and Playwright for web, using Claude Code to help you write and fix tests.
- Do hands-on exploratory testing: try the edge cases, the odd sequences and the "what if a user does this?" paths that automated tests miss.
- Investigate failing tests and tell the difference between a real bug and a flaky test.
- Check releases before they ship to the App Store, Google Play and production, and keep a clear go/no-go checklist.
Report bugs developers can act on
- Write clear bug reports with exact steps to reproduce, expected vs. actual results, device and version details, and screenshots or recordings.
- Track bugs through to the fix and retest them.
- Spot patterns (the same kind of bug recurring, one area that keeps breaking) and raise them with the team.
Support our beta tester community (secondary)
- As time allows, help coordinate our group of beta testers: share what to test in each build and gather their feedback.
- Turn beta feedback into clear, prioritized reports for the development team.
Improve how we work
- Build and maintain test plans and regression checklists for key user flows.
- Find new ways to use AI tools to test more, faster, without losing thoroughness.
What we're looking for
- You're picky, in the best way. You notice the button that's 2 pixels off, the typo on the third screen and the step that breaks only when you go back twice. You check things thoroughly, even the tenth time.
- You're self-motivated. You work independently, decide what to test without being told, and keep high volume moving without letting quality slip.
- You have Maestro experience, or strong experience with another mobile test automation tool (such as Appium or Detox) and the drive to master Maestro quickly. Hands-on Maestro experience is strongly preferred.
- You can work in TypeScript or JavaScript. You don't need to be a developer, but you can read, edit and debug test code with confidence.
- You use AI tools every day. We expect you to use Claude Code to write tests, analyze failures and speed up repetitive work. If you haven't used it yet, you're ready to learn it fast.
- You're comfortable with technology and learn it fast. You can speak tech with developers, follow technical instructions and pick up new tools quickly.
- You write clearly. Your bug reports and updates are precise enough that a developer can act on them without asking follow-up questions.
- You have QA or testing experience, ideally testing mobile and web software.
Nice to have
None of these are required. Apply even if you have none of them.
- Experience with Playwright (we can teach it)
- Experience testing React Native or Expo apps, including TestFlight and Google Play testing tracks
- Familiarity with GitHub, pull requests or CI pipelines (such as GitHub Actions)
- Experience running a beta program, managing an online community, or working in customer support
- Interest in meditation, consciousness or the Monroe Institute's work
Application Process
If you are interested in this position, please send an email to careers@monroeinstitute.org along with a PDF of your resume including references. In your cover letter, outline your QA background: the products you've tested, the tools you've used (especially Maestro, TypeScript and AI tools) and what you're proudest of. We will contact you if we are interested in setting up an interview.
