Using Mantras in Meditation—and in Daily Life
The more I practice daily meditations, the more I see the value of using mantras. It seems simple at first, but there’s a lot of psychological play behind them. The more I repeat a mantra, the more I feel it to be true. Here are a few ways I’ve found using mantras helps me improve my practice and become a stronger person.
For those who don’t know, a mantra is a phrase or affirmation that you repeat to yourself as you meditate or go about your day. It’s a way to confidently validate a thought process or message you want to embrace. Repeating mantras regularly helps you to accept them as true.
One of the most common things for the mind to do in meditation is to wander. While this isn’t exactly a problem, when you go into meditation with an intention, you’d prefer not to wander too far from it. Repeating a mantra can help to focus your attention throughout the meditation. It provides guideposts to follow as you wander and explore your mind’s inner workings. This can also lead to a better ability to focus your attention throughout your daily life. The more you become used to focusing on intentions and specific mantras, the easier it may be for you to focus as you go through your day. I know that mantras have helped me to focus on the specific goals that I set for myself and have kept me on task effectively.
It seems simple at first, but there’s a lot of psychological play behind them. The more I repeat a mantra, the more I feel it to be true. Here are a few ways I’ve found using mantras helps me improve my practice and become a stronger person.
The rhythmic and repetitive nature of a mantra can have a naturally calming effect on the mind. According to certain studies in neuroscience, repetitive activities, including the use of mantras, can have a measurable effect on the brain. Recent studies show that repetitive sounds can actually influence the wave patterns of the brain and lead one to a more relaxed state. This would make sense, as according to many psychologists, mantras help to reduce stress and anxiety, thereby calming the mind.
Crafting positive mantras for yourself can also have a positive effect on your mental state. For instance, if you’ve been feeling that you aren’t strong and the world is bringing you down, you can focus on a mantra such as “I am a pillar of strength. I can endure anything and come out stronger.” The more you repeat this in your practice, the more your mind accepts it as true, and the stronger and happier you can become. It’s a great way to invite in the strength that you may so desperately need. Other great mantras to invoke that positive state include: “I can perform this task,” “I am great at what I do,” and “I bring joy to many people in my life, and they bring joy to me.”
Believing that you can and will is the first step down that path. Again, mantras are powerful tools that can help you change your mindset and therefore grow as a person.
A great way to craft a mantra for yourself is to see what you may be lacking or what is hurting you in life. Are you not feeling respected? You can use the mantra, “Everyone respects me and values my work.” By allowing yourself to feel respected, you are open to changing your viewpoint and mindset on this. Or you can focus on a goal you’d like to set for yourself. If the goal is to write a book, your mantra can be, “I am an excellent writer, and I will write my book this year.” Believing that you can and will is the first step down that path. Again, mantras are powerful tools that can help you change your mindset and therefore grow as a person.
If you’d like to learn more about this, both MC Squared and the at-home exercise SyncCreation offer support for creating helpful mantras. They are excellent tools for manifestation, and being manifestation programs, they can help you to get the most out of mantras in your meditation practice.
I’ve been using mantras to manifest successfully for years. And when I’ve been at my lowest emotionally, I’ve found the value in using mantras to lift my spirits and to allow me to see my value once again. They are powerful tools so long as you incorporate them into your meditations as well as your daily thoughts.
